They should love medicine…

I don’t know where I found this quote. But, it makes sense. People often ask me what to look for in acupuncturist; I think they should seek a practitioner like the one described below:

I don’t think a doctor needs to be particularly clever.
He needs to be moderately intelligent, but he doesn’t need to be anything like a physicist or mathematician, although if he is it does no harm.
But he must have a strong common sense, and a feeling for people and their lives, and a sense of sympathy, and at the same time, he mustn’t be too sentimental, and think he must love medicine.
In Good Magazine Nov/Dec08 I saw an article, Poor Man’s Prick, about a clinic in Portland. workingclass acupuncture.org. 400 patients per week.
$15/visit. A biz model that get really get under your skin.
Wanted to tell you about it and find you in China.
Awake at 5 am in Bellevue at my computer, your blog gives me hope.

Yes, it is an interesting business model. It has its benefits in terms of low cost, but it is also just acupuncture. I doubt that anyone could profitability do both acupuncture and herbs in the limited time required when your business model requires fast turn around. In some ways it reminds me of how acupuncture is done here in China. Very quick and to the point (sorry bad pun), and all done in a public setting. Personally, I rather enjoy the camaraderie of the Chinese clinics, somehow losing the sense that we have to whisper the sins of our illness to a professional in a white coat takes some of the power out of them!
