Staying healthy with the seasons
Aug 31st, 2006 by Michael Max
You know when it happens.
You sense the Fall change of light, and the way that the air contains a chill along with a slightly metallic smell. You notice it in the Spring when a certain kind of green invades your vision. The seasonal pivots, the moments when we know deeply in our being that we have journeyed from one season to another.
It calls forth a different kind of balance, as our sleep habits change to the new length of the day, our skin breathes open or constricts to match the new warmth or cold, and our diet has us leaning toward certain kinds of foods and drinks.
Our bodies go through tremendous shifts at the seasonal change. It’s not unlike the shifts we make when we first leave home, or fall into a relationship, lose a job, or go through menopause. Our lives have pivot points where we let go of what has sustained up to now, and now….
…now we must find a new balance.
According to a the Classic of Difficulties, one of the earliest books on acupuncture theory and practice, the season pivot is an especially powerful time to bring the body into balance.
As we all know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. In addition to acupuncture, there are a number of methods commonly used in China, that you can use at home to strengthen your immune system. One is called moxabustion, it involves burning a particular herb called “ai ye” on certain of acupuncture points. Both western and eastern research has shown this method to increase white blood count and build immunity.
Yong Kang Clinic wants to help you promote your health and wellbeing during this Fall’s seasonal change. Drop by for a free moxa kit, with instructions on how to keep your immune system strong!
Remember Chinese medicine is not just for curing illness, but for preventing it as well.
